In dentistry, crown and bridge (Restorative Dentistry) refers to the restoration of natural teeth that have been damaged, decayed or lost. Once Dr. Kumar has examined your teeth and has evaluated your dental and medical history, she will be ready to provide a diagnosis, and treatment options. A crown may be constructed to restore an individual damaged tooth back to it's original form and function, while a bridge may be utilized to replace one or more teeth. These restorations are cemented onto the teeth and are referred to as "fixed" dentistry as opposed to a restoration of missing teeth with a removable appliance or partial denture.

Crowns

If you want a smile that's your crowning glory, you may need a crown to cover a tooth and restore it to its normal shape and size. A crown can make your tooth stronger and improve its appearance.

Crown can cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't enough tooth left as shown in the image below. This procedure also strengthens the teeth and restores the natural look of the teeth.

A crown can be used to attach a bridge, protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore one that's already broken. A crown is a good way to cover teeth that are discolored or badly shaped. It's also used to cover a dental implant.

Dr. Kumar's primary concern, like yours, is helping you keep your teeth healthy and your smile bright -- literally, your crowning glory.

Bridges

If you have one or more missing tooth or if you are getting an extraction done, watch this video to see what your potential treatment options may be.

A bridge will restore your smile, provide the ability to properly chew and speak, maintain the shape of the face, distribute the forces in your bite and prevent the remaining teeth from drifting out of its position affecting the aesthetics and bite mechanisms. Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth.

A bridge is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap – these two anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth – and a false tooth/teeth in between. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these materials. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth.

Partial Dentures (Removable)

A partial denture is useful for a person missing some teeth, but still having a number of natural teeth. Besides just replacing a set of missing teeth, a partial denture helps improve the ability to chew, aids in the preservation of remaining healthy teeth, prevents the other healthy teeth from drifting from their positions, improve speech, helps prevent or treat problems of the TMJ (the jaw joint) and supports the face with more youthful appearance, not to mention an enhancement in self esteem.

Partial dentures, also called a removable prosthesis, and is a means by which artificial replacement teeth are held in the mouth. The prosthesis is commonly kept in place by means of clasps. These are thin finger-like structures, usually made of a special resilient metal alloy or sometimes plastic, that rest upon and wrap around some remaining natural teeth. Clasps keep the prosthesis securely in place but still allow a person to easily take it out for regular cleaning and proper brushing of remaining natural teeth.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures are less than perfect replacements for natural teeth. However, they have proven to be effective for countless individuals and can be comfortable to wear - - if a person has reasonable expectations and recognizes that there will definitely be an adaptation period.

Gums may experience slight shrinkage after wearing the full dentures for few months. Dr. Kumar will work with you to evaluate your denture fit and may recommend relining your complete dentures usually within six months.
